SAMUEL AUSTIN WOODWARD

March 21, 2026 Samuel Austin Woodward, 76, of Charleston, South Carolina, a man who dedicated his immeasurable energy and talent generously to all, had gone from among us. His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Church Cathedral, 98 Wentworth Street. Inurnment will be private. The family will receive friends Friday, April 17, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel. 

Sam spent his early years in Watchung, New Jersey, growing up happily alongside his brothers and sister. With summers spent on Cape Cod, Sam was an enthusiastic sailor and thoroughly enjoyed mucking about on boats. 

Never considered the archetypal student, Sam’s insatiable dedication to academics and lifelong pursuit of learning earned him a Bachelors and PhD degree from The University of South Carolina. 

His lifelong pursuit of knowledge fueled his passion for mentorship. He provided luminous insight and advice to graduate students at the College of Charleston School of Business and countless individuals throughout their careers. 

Sam was a renowned transportation executive with more than 40 years of leadership.  He led multiple companies as Chairman, CEO, and President, including Horizon Lines and Gemini Air Cargo. He focused on complex turnarounds, restructurings, and value creation leading to successful exits.

In retirement, Sam continued his work with a particular focus on creating economic opportunity in Charleston, South Carolina. He partnered closely with private equity and operating companies in the supply chain sector to support growth and development in his home city. 

Away from the boardroom, he found joy in gardening and peace in pottery. In the garden and at Studio Union he dedicated himself to cultivating an environment of creativity and harmony.

Above all, Sam provided an unshakable foundation of love for his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a particularly proud grandfather “Cappy” to Charles and Coco Schalandek, Deke and Ella Drinkwater.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Brenda Drake; two daughters, Ashley Woodward of Charleston, SC, and Elisa Woodward of Chadds Ford, PA; his sister, Nancy Fredrich of Austin, TX; two brothers, Thomas Woodward of Florida and John Woodward of Florida; and his four beloved grandchildren, Coco, Charles, Deke, and Ella. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred E. Woodward, and his mother, Elizabeth Ann A. Woodward.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
